Toby wants to share on how to teach ASL properly. Some people’s method of teaching is vocabularies only. Should not! Should teach language involved.

I agree with you! ASL teacher should teach all of ASL language, not just words.
Hearing people tends to follows English language while using sign language, if you don’t teach all of ASL. Thanks for sharing vlog! :)

I appreciated this advice and will make it a goal. Unfortunately, though I have been deaf for 33 of my 36 years, I never learned non-manual signals, aside from just a few recently. As a result, my ASL is mostly vocabulary + some ASL grammar. I am working on improving this, and appreciate finding your vlogs on nms.

Just ONE way I will disagree, however: If there are NO QUALIFIED NATIVE ASL SIGNERS to teach a person, then ASL vocabulary is better than nothing. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If I go to the store and the bagger signs “Paper, plastic” and nothing else, that’s better than having to try lip-reading.

“ASL vocabulary is better than nothing.” Yes and no. But at college level, I have to say no. But if at church, or anything not at college level, then it is fine. The most important for people to understand ASL well is to learn more depth of the language and linguistics of ASL rather than vocabularies. ASL is richest to learn ASL structure, etc.
